Rani-ki-Vav (the Queen's Stepwell), Patan, Gujarat

Rani ki Vav added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2014 is an elaborate stepwell which queen Udayamati had contructed in 1063 on the banks of River Saraswati in memory of her husband King Bhimdev I of the Solanki dynasty at Patan in Gujarat .

Vav is a stepwell. Stepwells are water storage systems accessible by descending flights of steps.

Rani-ki-Vav structured as an inverted temple is divided into seven levels of stairs with sculptured panels of the Dasavataras (ten incarnations of Vishnu, including Buddha), sadhus, brahmins, and apsaras. At the fourth level is the water tank.

The vav was flooded by the Saraswati river and silted over.  Excavation work by the Archeological Survey of India began in the 1950s and the structure was restored to condition in 1980s.

It has been awarded as the cleanest iconic place in India.
