Nagaland became the 16th state of India on 1 December 1963.

The "Land of Seven Sisters" ia a name to denote the inter-dependency of the 7 contiguous states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura in northeastern India. The neighbouring 8th North eastern state Sikkim is called the only brother of seven sisters states.
