Jaisalmer
One of the
most remote towns of India, located deep in the heart of the Thar desert,
it was founded by Prince Jaisal Bhatti.
On either side
of the narrow lanes in Jaisalmer, are the sandstone mansions (which are
still occupied), with stone carvings, screen windows, delicate pavilions
& balconies. The balconies jutting out from either side almost
touch overhead. The most magnificent mansions are Patwon ki Haveli
with its latticed facade, Salim Singh ki Haveli built 3000 years ago with
beautiful arched roofs, Nathmalji ki Haveli, Mumal ki Mehri.
The Gadisal lake
& the hill was discovered by Jaisal. The Fort (Sonar Kila ),
a triangular edifice was built in 1156 on the highest point of the Tricuta
hill and is entered through the Suraj Pol. The Fort has 99 double
tiered bastions and a group of five Jain temples built between the 12th
- 15th centuries. Other places worth a visit are the Megh Durbar
(Hall of Clouds) and the King's well.

The first major
battle was when Alaudin Khilji laid siege, which lasted for 8 years.
Women and children in several lakhs perished in johar, while the men died
fighting. The second attack was by Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq.
After 1570 peace was established with the Moghuls and the wealth accumulated
at this time was converted into magnificent palaces and temples.
Gharisar had
once supplied water to the city. There are several temples and archways
around it.
Sam, 45 kms
away with its sand dunes is famous for the desert festival.
Lodurva 15
kms, was the previous capital, now in ruins. The Jain temples here
are being rebuilt now.
