Indian treatises on painting offer innumerable insights in their answers to this question. The Citra-sūtra of the Viṣṇu-dharmottara-purāṇa, the Mānasollāsa, and the Jayamaṅgalā commentary on the Kāma-sūtra provide us with principles of aesthetics that can help the artist hone his skills and also work as tools for the connoisseur for art appreciation.

Arjun Bharadwaj is an author, researcher, and translator with a deep interest in classical literature, arts, and philosophy. An engineer by training, he is well-versed in Sanskrit, Kannada, English, German, and Greek languages.
