Indian treatises on painting offer innumerable insights in their answers
to this question. The Citra-sūtra of the Viṣṇu-dharmottara-purāṇa, the
Mānasollāsa, and the Jayamaṅgalā commentary on the Kāma-sūtra provide us
with principles of aesthetics that can help the artist hone his skills
and also work as tools for the connoisseur for art appreciation.
