Meghalaya was originally a part of Assam, became an Autonomous State on
2nd April 1970 and a full-fledged State on 21st January 1972.
Shillong, which was made Assam's capital in 1874, remained so till January 1972, following the formation of Meghalaya.
Cherapunji which was the wettest place originally belonged to Assam but is now a part of Meghalaya.
The "Land of Seven Sisters" ia a name to denote the inter-dependency
of the 7 contiguous states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur,
Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura in northeastern India. The
neighbouring 8th North eastern state Sikkim is called the only brother
of seven sisters states.
